Manager's Message: June 2023

As we enter in to the long days of summer, school is out and the spring sports teams have played their final games. The spring Town paving projects are complete, and now we focus on the many other weather-dependent projects we do this time of year. The recent rain has greened up all of the Town properties, and they all look great. As we look forward to the July 4th celebration, I hope you get a chance to visit and enjoy some of the Town’s many natural resources.

Route 7 Paving is in the Works!

I am happy to report that Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) has informed us that they plan to pave Route 7 from the Colchester town line to the bridge at the end of Main Street. This is approximately five miles. The work will begin the week of July 6 and take approximately 30 days to complete depending on weather. VTrans, like the Town, has limited resources and thousands of miles of paved road. We work collaboratively on many projects annually with VTrans and are grateful they were able to find the resources this year to complete this much-needed paving project.  The Selectboard, Staff, State Representatives and residents have been advocating for the paving of Route 7 for the last several years. We ask for your patience as this and the bridge resurfacing project will both be in full swing through the month of July.

Grange Hall Reopens on Saturday, July 8

The Grange Hall is ready to reopen! Join us for an open house event on Saturday, July 8 to check out the newly renovated community meeting space. We can’t wait for you to see it! We are currently working on establishing rental fees and a scheduling policy. Follow the Town’s facebook page and the website calendar for event announcements.

Cemetery Work Day ImageVillage Cemetery Work Day Was a Success

On Saturday June 10th over 40 people volunteered along with members of the Vermont Old Cemetery Association and Town Cemetery Advisory committee to upright one hundred forty seven old monuments that have shifted over the nearly 200 years they have been in place. A number of other monuments were cleaned as part of the annual work session. The members of the Masonic Lodge generously provided a free lunch for the volunteers. Thank you to all those that helped make the day a huge success. Check out photos from the event (video slideshow)

The Town Clerk and Treasurer’s Office Had a Busy Month

Over the past month, the Town Clerk’s office has been especially busy with processing delinquent tax and water payments, among their other usual duties of notarizing documents, processing land records, issuing birth and death certificates and more.

Unfortunately, we saw an increase in late water/sewer bill payments on the April billing cycle, with 516 accounts missing the initial due date. Most of these had paid by the time shutoff notices went out, and we had 30 shutoffs as of June 9.

We are optimistic that the new automatic debit payment option will help improve these numbers as more users enroll. The deadline to submit paperwork to join this program for the July billing cycle was June 10, and we have 316 accounts enrolled. Click here to learn more about how you can enroll for the October water/sewer bill.
